We used to solely get a Day of the Devs showcase annually in the course of the summer season. Now we get an encore in the course of the holidays as effectively. This yr’s Day of the Devs: Recreation Awards 2024 Version didn’t disappoint both. Each time I feel the closely curated, very private, extraordinarily intimate showcase can’t probably prime the final one, someway it nonetheless does.
Because the online game trade ping-pongs from one big-budget sequel and live-service catastrophe to the subsequent, with seemingly ever much less room for creativity, experimentation, and risk-taking, Day of the Devs reminds us that wild, fantastic issues are being made throughout us so long as you recognize the place to look. And the group, which began as a collaboration between DoubleFine and iam8bit earlier than changing into a donation-supported non-profit, does certainly know the place to look.
This yr’s occasion featured 19 rad-looking video games from all kinds of genres, sporting a beautiful assortment of visible types and coming from devs around the globe, and I can’t wait to strive all of them. Particularly TankHead, which looks as if what you’d get when you set Shadow of the Colossus on the earth of Wall-E.
